
However, the committee did not elaborate on the matter.
“The committee will continue to meet from time to time to review the need to either prolong or lift the emergency,” it said in a brief statement.
The 19-member committee, chaired by former chief justice Arifin Zakaria, was formed on Feb 9.
The bipartisan committee was set up under Section 2 of the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 and serves to advise the King on the emergency in Malaysia and on when to end it.
Its members include former inspector-general of police Norian Mai, former armed forces chief Zulkifli Zainal Abidin and former health director-general Dr Mohamad Taha Arif.
Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar (Umno), Batang Lupar MP Rohani Abdul Karim (GPS), Beaufort MP Azizah Mohd Dun (Bersatu) and Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh (PAS) are the government MPs on the committee.
Opposition MPs on the committee comprise Kulim-Bandar Bharu MP Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (PKR), Seremban MP Loke Siew Fook (DAP) and Kuala Selangor MP Dzulkefly Ahmad (Amanah).
Aside from Taha, two other health experts on the committee are cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Yahya Awang, who is the founder and former head of the National Heart Institute (IJN), and Dr Andrew Kiyu, who is a professor of public health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.
Former chief secretary to the government Samsudin Osman, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia president Ter Leong Yap, Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, Universiti Cyberjaya pro-chancellor R Palan, former deputy public prosecutor Salehuddin Saidin and former Sabah state secretary Sukarti Wakiman make up the remainder of the 19-member committee.
On Jan 12, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, declared a state of emergency to curb the spread of Covid-19.
It is scheduled to last until Aug 1 or an earlier date if Covid-19 cases are reduced and stabilised.
Parliament and all state assemblies have been suspended during this period.
