This came after he had given his statement for nearly two hours at the Dang Wangi police station today.
The Muar MP said the police, on the instructions of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), also took control of his Instagram and TikTok accounts.
The authorities are investigating a 45-second video Syed Saddiq made on April 28 following the death of cow’s milk trader A Ganapathy while in police custody.
“I’m not sure if confiscating my phone is legal, but I have left this matter to my lawyer.
“Why do they want to confiscate my phone?
“For me, this is unnecessary because I voluntarily allowed them to access my social media accounts,” he told reporters outside the police station.
Syed Saddiq said he was not blaming police, claiming that the action against him was a politically motivated move orchestrated by MCMC.
He also said it was possible that he could be summoned again to record another statement, adding that he was being investigated under Section 503 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Ganapathy had died in hospital on April 18, more than a month after being taken there from the Gombak district police headquarters on March 8.
Two days ago, another death happened at the same police station when 42-year-old security guard Sivabalan Subramaniam died less than an hour after being taken in.
Tell police to stop harassment, Kok urges PM
The police action has come under criticism from DAP and MIC, among others.
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok of DAP said there was nothing wrong about Syed Saddiq’s criticism over Ganapathy’s death in custody.
“The police ought to have responded to his comments via the official media instead of ordering an investigation,” she said.
Kok urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to publicly call on the police to stop the harassment against Syed Saddiq. Communications and multimedia minister Saifuddin Abdullah should also clarify whether he had ordered MCMC to probe the matter, she added.
Probe your own men, says MIC
MIC Youth secretary Teeageesh Ganesan said the police force should investigate its own officers stationed in Gombak.
“The death in custody occurred at the Gombak district police headquarters, not Syed Saddiq’s house or office,” said Teeageesh.
He also said Syed Saddiq was only doing his duty as an MP to bring up issues concerning the people.
