UTM Skudai under EMCO, days after 2,000 students leave

This comes after 49 of 346 Covid-19 tests taken returned positive.

Cases were recorded at the Datin Seri Endon College, Tun Hussein Onn College, Tun Dr Ismail College, College 9 and 10, as well as the health centre at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor.
PETALING JAYA:
The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai campus in Johor will be placed under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from Friday, less than two weeks after some 2,000 students had left the campus.

In a statement today, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the decision was taken after 49 of 346 Covid-19 tests taken there came back positive.

Ismail said the cases were recorded at the Datin Seri Endon College, Tun Hussein Onn College, Tun Dr Ismail College, College 9 and 10, as well as the health centre.

“The health ministry has reported a high positivity rate of 14.2% as well as the spread of positive cases at several other colleges,” said Ismail.

The EMCO, which will be until June 3, comes just after nearly 2,000 students returned to their hometowns for Hari Raya and it is not known if any were infected before they left the campus.

Earlier this month, the higher education ministry announced that more than 100,000 students, except those from Sarawak, in campuses across the country would be allowed to return home for the Hari Raya holidays.

They returned home between May 7 and 12 and were expected back on campuses from May 15 to 20. This has been extended to the end of the current nationwide MCO on June 7.

Ismail also announced the end of the EMCO at several localities in Perak, Melaka and Sabah.

In Perak, the EMCO at Kampung Lubok Katak in Tapah will end tomorrow as scheduled after the health ministry recorded a downward trend in cases, with all positive cases having received treatment and close contacts isolated.

In Melaka, the EMCO at Kampung Permatang Tulang Mukim Sebatu in Jasin will end tomorrow as scheduled. The health ministry said the last case was recorded on May 11.

In Sabah, the EMCO at SMK Madai in Kunak, which was scheduled to end on May 28, will conclude tomorrow after the health ministry recorded a downward trend in cases and there were no more samples to be analysed.

Meanwhile, Ismail said police arrested 513 people yesterday over MCO-related offences.

Of that number, 484 were slapped with compound fines and 29 remanded.

Among the offences were failure to wear face masks (185), failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration (105) and failing to maintain physical distancing (79).

A total of 4,040 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 28,601 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, among other places.

Ismail also said police arrested 22 illegal immigrants and seized two vehicles under the ongoing Op Benteng.
