PETALING JAYA:
A memorandum endorsed by opposition MPs calling for a de-escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict will be sent to the US Embassy in Malaysia, Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders said.

Speaking at a virtual conference today, PKR MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said the MPs had planned to submit the memorandum yesterday through a virtual platform but it was rejected by the embassy.

He said the embassy preferred that the memorandum be handed over physically.

“However, we cannot do that due to the movement control order. Therefore, this online conference is a symbolic delivery of the memorandum to them,” Syed Ibrahim said.

Among others, the memorandum demands that the embassy condemns and stops the unprovoked aggression and attacks by Israel against Palestinians in Jerusalem, Gaza, West Bank and other occupied territories because it violates universal human rights and international resolutions, in particular, UN Security Council Resolutions 476, 478 and 2334.

Syed Ibrahim said the memorandum urges the international community, especially the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, to act within the limits of their capabilities to prevent and punish “instances of Israeli apartheid”.

“US’ actions and Washington’s blessings for the Israeli crimes against the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people must be condemned and reassessed in line with a bill in US Congress seeking to end US complicity for Israeli human rights abuses.

“It is an undeniable fact that US assistance has long been used by Israel’s security forces to violate the human rights of Palestinian children, demolish the homes of Palestinian families, or to permanently annex Palestinian lands,” he said.

The memorandum also urges the Malaysian government to provide solid measures to tackle the issue.

The government, Syed Ibrahim said, must strongly condemn Israel’s violation and suppression of the Palestinian right to self-determination by pushing organisations such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Arab League and UN to take meaningful action to protect Palestinians.

The memorandum also urges Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to call for a special emergency session of Parliament to address the matter.

The virtual conference was also attended by DAP’s Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, PKR’s Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, Amanah’s Pulai MP Salahuddin Ayub and Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik.
