KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia is prepared to send a peacekeeping team to Gaza if the United Nations makes a request, defence minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

The senior minister for security said Malaysia cannot make a decision to send a peacekeeping team to the Middle East on its own as it involves international laws.

“It must be decided by the UN. We cannot send an army on our own,” he said at a press conference today.

In the past, Malaysia had sent peacekeeping teams to various countries through the United Nations. This included Lebanon, the Philippines, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Congo.

Yesterday, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and a de-escalation of the situation, which has seen scores of civilians killed and injured.

The joint statement by the leaders of the three countries also called for an interim  international team to monitor the ceasefire, and urged the UN to take quick action on the crisis in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Putrajaya again expressed disappointment with the UN Security Council for failing to reach a consensus quickly and put an end to the violence.

In a statement today, foreign minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the UN Security Council held its third teleconference session yesterday but had yet to release any statement on the situation.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN) Youth insisted today that Israel be charged at the International Criminal Court for its violent attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Gaza Strip, reports Bernama.

In a joint statement signed by five PN youth chiefs – from Bersatu, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah (STAR), Parti Progresif Sabah (SAPP) and Gerakan – the youths called for an immediate cessation of war, military action and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

They also urged international leaders and organisations to condemn the oppression and occupation in addition to pressuring Israel and the US to be fair and honest in implementing the pre-1967 agreement to establish a sovereign Palestinian state.

“(We) agree with the stand taken by the Malaysian government that supports a fair and just two-state solution based on the pre-1967 border agreement with Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital, as the only solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict,” the statement read.

It was reported that the Israeli military attacks and incursions began with an attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque on May 7 followed by air strikes on Gaza since last Monday. More than 100 Palestinians have been reported killed and hundreds more injured as a result.
