Record high 39 deaths, 4,765 Covid-19 cases

The health director-general says the country’s daily cases may breach the 5,000 mark by mid-May.

PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry has reported 4,765 Covid-19 cases and a record high 39 deaths in the past 24 hours, with Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah warning that the number of cases could breach the 5,000 mark by next week.

On May 6, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob had also warned Malaysians that Covid-19 cases could reach 5,000 daily after the Hari Raya festivities if the public failed to adhere to the SOPs.

The health director-general said there were 3,124 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 411,360.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 453,222.

There are 40,101 active cases, with 469 patients being treated in intensive care and 244 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 39 deaths take the number of fatalities to 1,761. The highest number of deaths recorded in a day before this was 26 deaths on May 9.

Selangor again recorded the highest number of cases with 2,082. This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (540), Sarawak (405), Johor (348), Kelantan (297), Penang (259), Kedah (226), Perak (172), Negeri Sembilan (122), Melaka (110), Sabah (70), Pahang (63), Terengganu (60), Labuan (6), Putrajaya (4) and Perlis (1).

The new cases today involved 4,758 local cases and seven imported ones. Local cases comprised 4,291 Malaysians and 467 foreigners.

The 39 deaths today involved 38 Malaysians and one foreigner, aged between 43 and 88. All but three of them had existing medical conditions.
