Varsity students, except Sarawakians, allowed to ‘balik kampung’ for Raya

The National Security Council says they may return to their hometowns or stay on campus.

The government says some 100,000 university students may be involved in travel during the Hari Raya holidays.
PETALING JAYA:
The government has allowed students at all higher educational institutions to return to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, except those from Sarawak.

The higher education ministry said this was decided by the National Security Council (MKN) at a meeting yesterday.

In a statement, it said the students may choose to either return to their hometowns or stay on campus during the festive period.

The students will only be allowed to travel home from May 7 to May 12, and return to campus from May 15 to May 20. This will be carried out in stages to control their movement.

“The universities will issue permission letters for interstate/inter-district travel and coordinate each student’s travel dates,” it said.

The students will only be allowed to use their own vehicles, or be driven by their parents, or use buses arranged by their universities.

“Travel by public transportation is not allowed, except for flights,” it said.

The ministry said it is expected to involve some 103,994 students who are on campus.

Students and parents seeking more information on this travel arrangement may check the ministry’s website for the standard operating procedures.
