PETALING JAYA:
The government has given an assurance that Parliament will reconvene at the right time, which could be before or after the emergency ends.

The assurance comes following calls from many parties including the Tamat Darurat committee who are seeking an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to hand over a petition calling for an end to the emergency.

Law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said that while the government was aware of its constitutional responsibilities to ensure the continuity of the democratic process in the country through Parliament, the priority was to ensure that the epidemic was fully controlled.

“The government has given an assurance that a parliamentary session will be called when the appropriate time comes, either before or after the emergency that ends on Aug 1, 2021.

“However it is still subject to the advice and views from experts in the health ministry and the National Security Council (MKN),” he said in a statement today.

Takiyuddin added that despite the emergency, all parties including the opposition can still voice out their views through the appropriate channel such as the Independent Special Committee on Emergency.

“There should be no doubt or suspicion of abuse of power because the government system is functioning as usual, including in monitoring by the enforcement authorities especially the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission (MACC), the national audit department and the public accounts committee (PAC),” he added.
