According to a Harian Metro report, magistrate Wong Chai Sia passed the sentence after Iram Naz Hafiz Sabir Muhammed, 25, and Azharique Shah Abdul Jalil, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge at the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court.
The couple was accused of committing the offence at the Wangsa Maju police station at 2pm on March 15 when applying for permission to travel to Johor.
They were both charged with giving false information in writing to the police station’s chief, Fairul Nizam Anuar, and charged under Section 22(d) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).
The couple could have been jailed a maximum of two years and fined up to RM10,000 under the Act.
Wong said the couple had set a bad example as interstate travel was not allowed during the movement control order in March.
“(Saying that) accommodation bookings cannot be cancelled and that the payment is non-refundable is not a valid reason to cross states,” said Wong before reading out the sentence.
Iram Naz appealed to the court not to impose a prison sentence taking into account she was the family’s breadwinner.
“We made a hotel reservation on Dec 26 when cross-country travel was allowed as we wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but it (the trip) was postponed several times,” she said.
“We tried to cancel the booking but the other party did not want to refund the money, so we decided to continue with our plan on March 17.”
Social media was abuzz last month when the celebrity couple posted videos of their wedding anniversary celebrations in Johor. They also said that they persuaded the police to grant them permission to travel interstate.
