KUALA LUMPUR:
Sikhs in Malaysia have played a crucial role in the nation’s history and have always stood out although they are a relatively small community, says Sultan Nazrin Shah.

Launching the first comprehensive text on the history of Malaysian Sikhs, the Perak Ruler said in addition to being an informative text, the book also highlighted the crucial role the community has played in Malaysia’s history.

“Although they only make up a tiny proportion of the population, the Sikhs have always stood out and made their presence known,” he said.

Sikhs in Malaysia: A Comprehensive History, by historian Ranjit Singh Malhi, compiles over a decade’s worth of research into the social, political, economic and sporting achievements of the community.

Sultan Nazrin believes the book is “destined to become a classic in its field” and that it showcases the key characteristics shown by the Sikhs that have allowed them to thrive in Malaysia.

“Adaptability, patriotism, commitment to education, hard work and thriftiness, and respect for tradition have together empowered the Sikhs to conquer the highest heights in modern Malaysia.”

Ranjit Singh Malhi with his book, the first comprehensive volume on the history of Sikhs in Malaysia.

Ranjit said the book was inspired by his late father’s wishes and a desire to record the “glorious” achievements of the Sikh community.

“Personally, I want to leave a legacy behind by writing a comprehensive, authoritative and generally objective history of Malaysian Sikhs for the benefit of future generations.”

He said Sikhs have played a variety of important roles throughout Malaysia’s development, from being primarily policemen, soldiers and labourers to contributing at a higher level in academia, business and the civil service.

Not resting on his laurels, a second book is on the way within the next 12 months to incorporate the feedback of the Sikh community to this volume as well as new information.

“I may also work on another book tentatively titled ‘Who’s Who of Malaysian Sikhs’, based upon painstaking research and focusing on individuals from all walks of life who have excelled and made a difference.”
