Ex-CJ’s son among 10 appointed judicial commissioners

All will be on a two-year probation pending confirmation as High Court judges.

The judicial commissioners will be appointed tomorrow.
PUTRAJAYA:
A son of a former chief justice is among 10 individuals from the judicial and legal service and private practice to be appointed as judicial commissioners tomorrow, sources said.

Mohd Arief Emran Arifin is a partner of legal firm Wong & Partners in Kuala Lumpur. His father, Arifin Zakaria, was the nation’s top judge from 2011 to 2017.

Two other lawyers are Adlin Abdul Majid from Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill, and John Lee Kien How from J Lee & Associates.

Another is Pahang state legal adviser Julia Ibrahim. She was also the lead prosecutor in the corruption trial of former minister Tengku Adnan Mansor, who was convicted in December for receiving RM1 million from a businessman.

Details of the others:

Samsulbahri Ibrahim is the head of the Kuala Lumpur branch of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) while Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas is the Melaka state legal adviser.

Hasbullah Adam is a senior sessions court judge while Norliza Othman is the chief registrar of the Court of Appeal.

Amelati Parnell is the chief registrar of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak while Roslan Mat Nor is deputy head of the trial and appeals division in the AGC.

All were interviewed and their names proposed by the Judicial Appointments Commission.

Judges are appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, acting on the advice of the prime minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers.

Amelati will take her oath of office before the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and the rest before Chief Judge of Malaya Azahar Mohamed.
