Umno going it alone? Tajuddin says party eyes 120 seats

'To put it simply, after the next (general election) not one party will have more seats than Umno,' he says.

Umno’s election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman has urged Puteri Umno to be confident in the party’s ability to form the next government.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno’s election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman says the party has decided to contest 120 parliamentary seats in the 15th general election, sparking speculation that the party would go to the polls even without PAS.

Speaking at the winding up of Puteri Umno’s debates here today, Tajuddin said: “The party has decided that we will contest no less than 120 parliamentary seats. Which party will contest more than that? Even PPBM won’t be contesting more than 50 or 60 seats. PAS also won’t contest up to 50 or 60 seats.

“To put it simply, after the next elections, believe me, not one party will have won more seats than Umno.”

The 120-seat figure had been raised earlier this month, when Tajuddin was reported to have said that Umno would contest 120 seats if it were to stand by itself or 96 seats if PAS continued to be a partner.

He said today that it was up to PAS to choose between working with Umno or with PPBM, but he hoped that PAS would look to the Muafakat Nasional charter it signed and the promises it had made.

“We agreed in MN, we signed a charter, that we will be together until we face the next general election. We hope PAS doesn’t break its promise. We (Umno) have given our guarantee that we won’t break our promise. We still want to be with PAS in the next elections,” he added.

Tajuddin urged Puteri Umno, the young women’s wing, to be confident about the party’s ability to form the government again after the next general election.

He said it was time for at least one state seat in each parliamentary constituency to be allocated for candidates from either the Puteri or Wanita wings of Umno.

He said he had already assigned two state seats in his parliamentary constituency of Pasir Salak to be contested by women candidates.
