The wing’s chief, Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal, said they were adamant that Undi18 must be implemented as planned.
“However, we understand that the EC would need to look at the best method to ensure that 18-year-olds are registered as voters to prevent any confusion on polling day,” Wan Fayshal, who is also the deputy youth and sports minister, said in a statement.
He said the wing was prepared to assist the relevant government agencies to expedite the process.
Wan Fayshal said political will and a concerted effort by all quarters were needed to ensure Undi18 was realised.
“A holistic plan to implement Undi18 must be proposed to ensure there is check and balance,” he said.
Yesterday, EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said the automatic registration of 18-year-olds as voters was expected to be delayed until after September 2022.
He said the movement restrictions due to the pandemic had disrupted the EC’s preparations to implement the act that was passed in Parliament in July 2019.
The move has sparked criticisms from the opposition, with some demanding Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan resign over the fiasco.
A non-governmental organisation, Undi18, is planning to take Putrajaya to court over the delay.
