PETALING JAYA:
A commotion ensued at the Perak DAP triennial elections when the faction led by Kampar MP Thomas Su and Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran claimed there might be “phantom voters” present.

According to a Facebook Live by Sin Chew Daily, Su had demanded an explanation from the party’s election committee over the registration procedures.

He claimed the committee was still calling delegates from the branches aligned to incumbent DAP state chairman Nga Kor Ming and Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham to attend, despite registration closing at 10am.

“My men went out (to the registration counter) to ask them to either stop or allow us to call our people from our branches, but they said ‘no’.

“So they have an advantage. What is this? An election must be fair, not taken advantage of,” he told reporters in the video.

Meanwhile, former Bercham assemblyman Cheong Chee Khing explained that all delegates in the attendance list were given a card with their names printed on it to enter the event.

However, he claimed that the committee had also issued handwritten cards to those who registered at the last minute.

In response, Nga clarified that the party election officer was appointed by DAP’s headquarters, saying disciplinary action will be taken against those who created the chaos earlier today.

“All processes are professional, transparent, independent and fair. I am extremely sorry that a small group of people deliberately disturbed (the process) because of the fear of losing,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

It was also reported that DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had held a meeting with Su and Kula to discuss the issue afterward. Both declined to give further comments.

However, Su hoped the polls would be held in a fair and transparent manner. The results are expected to be known after 6pm today.

Some 2,000 delegates from over 300 DAP branches are attending the state convention today to cast their vote at the party’s triennial elections to form a new 15-member state committee.

Under the party’s constitution, the 15 elected candidates will proceed to choose the office bearers, including the posts of chairman, deputy chairman and two vice-chairmen.
