PETALING JAYA:
AG Kalidas Krishnan has been elected as the new president of the Malaysian Bar Council at the organisation’s annual meeting today.

He previously served as the council’s secretary, a role now taken over by Shahareen Begum, chairman of the Johor Bar.

Murshidah Mustafa from the Kedah Bar has been elected as the council’s treasurer.

Surindar Singh retains his place as vice president, having run unopposed.

Kalidas will take over the role of president from Salim Bashir, who did not offer himself up for another term despite the Legal Profession Act allowing a lawyer to hold the position for two years.

“I have reached the end of my term as president and will not offer myself for re-election,” he told FMT in a text message today.

The council’s annual meeting was held virtually for the first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
