PETALING JAYA:
Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has urged the women, family and community development ministry (KPWKM) as well as education ministry (KPM) to look into dual licensing for operators of childcare centres and kindergartens, so that the two services can be offered under the same roof.

She said the issue had caused much confusion among parents during the repeated lockdowns when the government only allowed childcare centres (for children younger than four years old) to open.

However, kindergartens for children aged between four and six were prohibited.

“Such a situation has made it difficult for parents of such children because they do not have any place to send their children to.

“Kindergarten operators also had to face financial implications due to this confusing situation.”

Yeoh also said there had been many meetings with stakeholders on the matter before, but no feedback from the ministry.

She said dual licences would reduce bureaucracy and create an effective monitoring system for the safety and well-being of children.

“I urge the KPWKM minister Rina Harun and KPM minister Radzi Jidin to prioritise this issue. The management of education and early care for children must immediately be coordinated under a single ministry.”
