PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s first liver transplant patient Mohd Afiq Ikmal Muhammad Zaini, 23, died this morning after suffering from complications in the organ.
Afiq underwent the transplant more than 20 years ago, when he was just 14 months old.
Berita Harian reported that Afiq, who had been undergoing treatment at the Selayang Hospital, died at around 5am today.
His liver donor, Wan Mohd Hafizam Wan Ismail, had received the news from Afiq’s father. Hafizam was only 23 when he donated part of his liver to Afiq.
Afiq’s body will be buried at his village in Tikam Batu, Sungai Petani, Kedah.
It was recently reported that Afiq fell unconscious and went into critical condition due to liver complications.
