Why are GPs and dentists in category two, says professor

Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman says general practitioners are the first to see those with illnesses which could well be Covid-19.

Universiti Malaya professor Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman has questioned why GPs and dentists were ‘relegated’.
PETALING JAYA:
A public health expert has taken issue with the government’s decision to “relegate” general practitioners and dentists to category two in its priority list for the national vaccination programme.

“Why is this so, Dr Adham Baba and Khairy Jamaluddin?” Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman said in a tweet, referring to the health minister and the immunisation coordinating minister respectively.

She said GPs and dentists “are usually the first port of call” for patients with severe acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illnesses, which could well be Covid-19.

Adeeba, a professor of medicine at Universiti Malaya, had shared a poster of a campaign for vaccine equity for all health workers.

Earlier today, the government released a priority list of two categories of frontliners in line for priority vaccination.

The first category comprised healthcare workers, in public and private institutions, including those in the state health departments; those who were treating patients as well as those at the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre.

The second category comprised general practitioners, health ministry contractors, dentists in the private sector and well as members of Parliament and assemblymen among others.

The guidelines were released in the wake of complaints of queue-jumping for vaccination.
