Perlis police chief Surina Saad said the police would be monitoring the social media to detect any element of anti-vaccine sentiments.
Bernama quoted her as saying there had been no such cases in Perlis thus far.
‘’There are numerous reports about the vaccine on social media, some are good and some are denigrating it. But what is important is that the vaccine is safe for use as seen when the prime minister became the first person to receive the vaccine shot,” she said.
She said action could be taken under the Penal Code as well as the Communications and Multimedia Act for causing alarm among the public.
Officials of the home ministry and the communications ministry are to strengthen cooperation to curb the spread of false news especially related to the vaccine, according to deputy home minister Ismail Mohamed Said.
He said those found to be spreading false news could be prosecuted under the Emergency Ordinance which had provisions for the offence. He said action would be taken against any parties causing chaos and discomfort among the society by spreading false news, not just relating to Covid-19 but also on other matters.
