In a video posted on social media, PKR president Anwar questioned the government’s priorities.
“If the government is doing this to uphold the adherence to the rules, I agree, but this will only burden the people.
“We know of many cases involving people in high places escaping punishment while the ordinary man receives the full punishment.
The new Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021, allows a person to be fined up to RM10,000 for violating MCO regulations.
The ordinance, which comes into effect on March 11, also states that companies which violate MCO regulations can be liable to be fined up to RM50,000.
Some groups including the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations and the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam have spoken against the fine, describing it as regressive and punitive.
Anwar said he could not understand the government’s “arrogance” in ignoring the sentiments on the ground.
He said he does not view breaches of the rules lightly but he cannot accept double standards.
“I call on the government to review this fine,” he said, adding the RM10,000 amount was too much and that the people will continue to suffer.
