8 men claim trial over protest against use of Jawi in vernacular schools

The accused were each released on RM3,000 bail.

JERANTUT:
Eight men were today charged in a magistrates’ court here for illegal assembly 18 months ago in protest against Jawi being included in Bahasa Melayu textbooks in vernacular schools.

Goh Say Aik, Leong Ah Kow, Yong Loong Sang, Cheong Sai Kow, Chip Tong Sang, Chip Meng Sung, Wong Keng Yau and Kong Teck Fook, however, claimed trial to the charge.

They committed the offence at 11.30am on Aug 20, 2019 in front of SRJK (C) Sungai Jan here to protest against the inclusion of Jawi in Bahasa Melayu textbooks in vernacular schools.

If found guilty they face a jail term of up to six months, a fine or both.

Lawyer T Gunaseelan who appeared with Ng See Teong for the defendants, said their clients were each released on RM3,000 bail.

The case has been set for mention before magistrate Nur Syafiqah Noorinda on March 30.

Deputy public prosecutor Anasuha Atiqah Mat Said prosecuted and suggested RM6,000 bail for each of the accused.

Ng proposed a lower amount as the eight cooperated with the police and came to court upon being informed to do so.
