Kokila makes history as first woman Selangor Bar chairman

This is also the first time a virtual annual general meeting is being held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Selangor Bar members voted through an online annual general meeting platform at today’s virtual meeting.

Long-time committee member V Kokila Vaani was today elected as the first woman chairman of the Selangor Bar in its 56-year history.

She defeated incumbent secretary Gabriel Susayan with a 135-vote majority. Incumbent chairman V Murali did not offer to contest the post.

Incumbent Bar Council secretary A G Kalidas was again elected as the state’s representative to the Malaysian Bar.

According to its website, it has 6,074 members in the state and the required quorum was achieved.

This is also the first time a virtual annual general meeting was being held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Members voted through an online annual general meeting platform and the system, Convene, tabulated the results without human interference.

Nurul Muhaniza Hanafi, M K Thas, Desmond Ho, Shankar Sundaram, Eugene Roy Joseph, Yu Ai Tin, N Yohendra, Richard Teh, Fahmi Moin Halim and Zainal Habidin were elected committee members.

The Kuala Lumpur Bar, the biggest in the country in terms of membership, will hold their meeting tomorrow, under the same conditions, that is virtually and using the same Convene vote tabulation system for the election of office-bearers.
