PETALING JAYA:
Putrajaya this evening announced that three villages in Besut, Terengganu as well as a rehabilitation centre and its quarters in Perak will be placed under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) starting Sunday.

This follows a surge in Covid-19 cases in these localities.

Senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the three villages that will be placed under an EMCO are Kg Darau-Awek, Kg Padang Baloh and Kg Lepan Kejor, Mukim Pasir Akar.

This, after 21 of the 570 individuals screened tested positive for Covid-19.

“The EMCO is meant to control the movement of villagers to reduce community transmissions as well as allow the health ministry to conduct targeted screenings of some 2,152 residents in these three localities,” he said in a statement.

Ismail went on to say that the Batu Gajah rehabilitation centre in Perak and the staff quarters would be placed under an EMCO after 29 people contracted the virus.

To date, 81 people were tested with 45 still awaiting their test result.

He said the health ministry will now carry out a targeted screening of all detainees and staff as well as contact tracing to ensure there were no community transmissions.

The EMCO at these localities will end on Feb 27.

Meanwhile, the EMCO at the Simpang Renggam prison and its staff quarters will end as scheduled on Feb 14.

Ismail said that to date, some 476 individuals have been screened, with 294 testing positive for the virus.

“The health ministry also reported that there has been a downward trend in the number of infections at the prison and the situation is under control.

“The last two cases were recorded on Feb 11.”

On a separate matter, 680 were arrested for flouting the standard operating procedures, including failing to observe social distancing, travelling to another state or district without approval and patronising entertainment centres.

Of this number, 610 were issued compounds, 59 remanded and 11 released on bail.

Ismail also said that 9,138 foreigners were screened for Covid-19 last night, with 120 testing positive.

A total of 362,067 foreign workers have been screened to date with 7,016 testing positive for the virus.
