AG hails his staff after Thomas’ poor rating

Idrus Harun tells staff that ex-AG's memoir is an insult to the legal institution and praises them for 'stellar work ethics'.

PETALING JAYA:
The attorney-general (AG) has praised his staff for their expertise, commitment and dedication, days after a book by former AG Tommy Thomas painted a poor picture of those in the country’s legal administration.

Idrus Harun, in a letter to his staff at the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), said they have been able to overcome challenges in addressing critical issues, and further asked his staff to uphold their “stellar work ethics” and to move the chambers forward by upholding justice.

In a letter sighted by FMT, Idrus further touched on the book written by Thomas titled ‘My Story: Justice in the Wilderness’, stating that the book, which questioned the capability and competency of the AGC staff, has received mixed reaction from various quarters.

“The contents of the book has created a negative view especially within the public, affecting the morale and confidence of public prosecutors.

“In my opinion, this (book) is an insult to our legal institution which I respect and admire,” Idrus said in his two-page letter.

He further touched on his service, saying he had 35 years of experience in the judiciary and as an Appeals Court judge.

“Due to that, I have no doubt about the capability, experience, commitment and dedication of the law officers in carrying out their duties without fear or favour,” Idrus added.

In fact, Idrus said, he was glad that since the release of the book, the officers have received decisions favouring the government in high-profile cases.

“This clearly shows the law officers are on par or even better than those in the private sector.”

He further said the officers are constantly working under pressure and beyond the call of duty, and “your sacrifices cannot be measured”.

Idrus criticised the book as “shallow” and written by a person with limited experience in the civil service, especially in the AGC and as an AG.
