RM5mil to expand Penang state exco offices

The exco offices have remained unchanged since it was first built in 1986, says chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The announcement to spend RM5 million on expanding the offices of the state exco members comes a month after a controversy over the chief minister’s new Mercedes.
GEORGE TOWN:
A month after the controversy involving the chief minister and his new RM458,000 car, the Penang government announced today that it will be renovating and expanding its state executive councillors’ offices at Komtar at a cost of close to RM5 million.

The tender will be awarded via open tender.

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the exco members’ offices have remained unchanged since 1986 (a year after Komtar was completed) with just 1,400 sq ft for each member.

He said the total cost to renovate the exco members’ offices on levels 52 and 53, including moving of offices temporarily to level 31, would cost an estimated RM4.95 million.

“No major renovations have been carried out since the offices were put in place in 1986. Projects approved in the open tender will be carried out with proper procedures in place.

“The project will also help stimulate the economy by helping the successful bidder during the pandemic,” he said in a statement.

Briefly, Chow said the state government has announced a RM20 million financial package on top of a stimulus of RM155.5 million approved last year to help those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said another RM50 million had been allocated for the state’s iSejahtera programme, where cash aid was given to single mothers, senior citizens, the disabled and young children.
