KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysian squash queen Nicol David has come up tops in a global online poll for the World Games’ greatest athlete of all time.

The eight-time squash world champion garnered 318,943 votes according to the International World Games Association. The 37-year-old Penangite had an unprecedented record nine-year reign as the world’s number one.

“It came as a surprise to see me among these other top athletes and I’m grateful for this … hopefully it can elevate attention for the future of squash, and it’s a proud moment to represent my country and Asia,” Nicol said when commenting on her win.

Her closest rival was Republic of Ireland’s James Kehoe, who had represented his country in tug of war in nine World Games with 113,120 votes, followed by women powerlifting athlete Larysa Soloviova from Ukraine with 80,790 votes and German Marcel Hassemeier (lifesaving) with 79,760 votes.

The winners will receive an Athlete of the Year trophy and a branded gift from the official sponsor.

International World Games Association president Jose Perurena said Nicol serves as an inspirational and a fine role model for younger athletes.

World Squash Federation president Zena Wooldridge said Nicol’s victory is recognition of a wonderful career that saw her break numerous records and win everything there was to win in the sport.

The poll was held in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the World Games, which are held every four years for sports that are not part of the Olympic Games.
