PETALING JAYA:
Police have explained a viral video showing their personnel helping to carry the statue of a deity just before the Thaipusam chariot left a temple in Kuala Lumpur on its annual journey to Batu Caves.

In a statement, Dang Wangi police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the video was recorded at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at Jalan Tun HS Lee at about 3am yesterday.

Some social media users had questioned why more than 10 people, including police officers, were taking part in what they thought was the “chariot procession”.

However, there were also social media users who thanked police for helping the devotees.

Zainal said the policemen were only helping to speed up the process of carrying the deity to be placed on the chariot after being asked to help as only 10 devotees were present in line with the standard operating procedures set by the National Security Council for the chariot’s journey to Batu Caves.

“All the officers and personnel involved were Hindus,” he added.
