Govt on alert for hacker attack

A group of activists called Anonymous Malaysia has vowed to launch a cyberattack on government websites.

The group of hackers called Anonymous Malaysia have threatened a major cyberattack against the government and all agencies have been told to be prepared to handle the attack.
PETALING JAYA:
The National Security Council (MKN) is bracing for a possible major cyberattack and has issued a notice to all government agencies to take measures to prevent and minimise the impact of any such attack.

This comes after the group of activists called Anonymous Malaysia vowed to launch a cyberattack on government websites and online assets called #OpsWakeUp21.

The group recently posted a video online of its plan to launch the cyberattack, saying it would serve as a “wake-up call” for the government purportedly in retaliation over data breaches and sale of personal information of the public, which is now being used in scams.

In a statement today, MKN said it viewed the threat seriously and, through the National Cyber Security Agency, was working with the police to take necessary action.

MKN said the government always prioritised the safety of its IT infrastructure and critical systems and had outlined measures needed to secure these assets.

“These measures have been outlined through the Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy launched last October.”

On Dec 29, the Malaysian Armed Forces confirmed a cyberattack was launched on its data network though it did not affect the operations of its portal.
