BUTTERWORTH:
Penang police have tightened surveillance at “rat trails” along the state’s border area to ensure that the ban on interstate travel is fully complied with during the movement control order period.

State police chief Sahabudin Abd Manan said a special team that also involved non-uniformed personnel would monitor the trails on a rotational basis.

He said there were at least 15 rat trails in the three mainland districts, Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Selatan.

“We also carried out mobile roadblocks. Stern action will be taken against those who try to cross the border illegally during the MCO period. If there is an emergency and a great need, I ask them to apply for a letter of permission at any nearby police station,” he said.

Sahabudin said police had increased inspection at the Butterworth railway station to ensure public compliance with travel restrictions. A permit from a nearby police station is needed before anyone may travel to another state or enter Penang.
