IPOH:
Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu has turned in his resignation to Sultan Nazrin Shah this afternoon, a day after losing a confidence vote in the state assembly.

Faizal said he handed in the letter after his audience with the sultan.

The members of the state executive council are also believed to have handed in their resignations.

Faizal said: “On behalf of myself and all members of the state executive council, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the state secretary, Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim, all Perak government administrators and all federal government departments and agencies in Perak.

“This experience has been very meaningful, filled with various challenges,” he said at a press conference at Laman Darul Ridzuan today.

He had said yesterday that he would carry out his duties as the head of a caretaker government until Sultan Nazrin appoints a new menteri besar.

Faizal, who is deputy president of PPBM, was in his second term as menteri besar of Perak.

He was first appointed to the post after the general election of May 2018, as the head of a Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

The PH state government collapsed in March, when PPBM left the coalition to form Perikatan Nasional

Faizal was appointed to a second term on March 13 with the support of 32 state assemblymen, including state members from Umno.

Yesterday, a confidence motion brought before the state assembly was defeated by 48-10 with one spoilt vote. The motion was tabled by Pengkalan Baru assemblyman Abd Manap Hashim of Umno.

The 59-member Perak state assembly comprises 33 members on the government bench, formed by Barisan Nasional (25) all from Umno; PPBM (5) and PAS (3), with support from one member from Gerakan and an independent.

The opposition Pakatan Harapan has 24 members, comprising DAP (16), Amanah (5), and PKR (3).
