Singapore recalls bacteria-tainted bottled water from Malaysia

Singapore Food Agency says the bottled water was found to be contaminated with pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, which can cause infections and pneumonia.

The bacteria was detected in a routine testing of ‘Meadows’ bottled water.
PETALING JAYA:
Singapore authorities have ordered for the recall of bottled drinking water imported from Malaysia after it was found to be contaminated with a bacteria usually found in faeces, soil, water and sewage.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it detected the pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria in “Meadows” bottled water in a routine testing of the product. The bacteria is known to cause infections in blood and pneumonia among humans, besides causing diseases in plants and animals.

The statement from Singapore said Cold Storage Singapore Pte Ltd, the importer of the bottled water, has completed the product’s recall.

“Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common environmental bacteria and can be found in faeces, soil, water and sewage. It can multiply in water environments and on the surface of suitable organic materials in contact with water.

“Consumption of products contaminated with pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause a range of infections but rarely causes serious illness in healthy individuals,” it said.

The SFA also advised those who have consumed the product to seek medical advice, adding that customers may seek refunds from their point of purchase.
