The current quota of seven NGO members, however, remains in the 48 available councillor posts in the Penang Island (MBPP) and Seberang Perai (MBSP) city councils annually.
There are now three NGO members in MBSP and four in MBPP.
At a press conference today, Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said next year’s appointments would also see women make up at least 30% of the members.
DAP has the most members in both city councils with 10 each, PKR has eight in MBPP and nine in MBSP, and Amanah has two on each side.
On the NGO councillors, Jagdeep said the normal practice was for members of the Penang Forum and the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce to nominate their members to fill the quota.
He said those interested to nominate councillors may do so by Dec 15 by writing to [email protected] or calling 04-650 5379 to check for eligibility.
