18 remanded in probe over Malaysia-Thai border shooting

Perlis police chief says the arrests were made within three hours of the incident.

Eighteen men have been remanded to facilitate investigations into the shooting incident between the General Operations Force (GOF) members and a group of smugglers at the Malaysia-Thailand border near Padang Besar, Perlis yesterday.

They comprise three Thais who have been remanded for seven days until Dec 1 and 15 Malaysians who have been remanded for four days until Saturday.

The remand order against the men, aged between 19 and 37, was issued by Kangar Magistrates’ Court assistant registrar Monica Joseph Gaisah.

GOF member Cpl Baharuddin Ramli, 54, was killed and his colleague, Cpl Norihan Tari, 39, severely injured in the incident that took place about 600m from the Border Wall TS9 control post in Padang Besar.

Baharuddin died on the spot, and Norihan is being treated at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital here.

Perlis police chief Surina Saad said the 18 men were arrested within three hours of the incident.
