Expect Sabah Covid-19 numbers to jump, says Masidi

State minister says the numbers will rise as large-scale testing is conducted in two lockdown localities of Kota Kinabalu from tomorrow.

Large-scale testing will begin tomorrow in two localities under a full lockdown.
KOTA KINABALU:
Covid-19 numbers for Sabah are expected to increase dramatically over the next few days as large-scale screening will be carried out in two areas under lockdown, state minister Masidi Manjun said today.

The screenings will be carried out at Telipok Settlement and Kampung Numbak from tomorrow. The two areas are in lockdown from today until Nov 29.

“Initial tests in Kampung Numbak found 134 positive cases while in Penempatan Telipok there were 207 positive cases. Both localities have a dense population totalling about 21,000 people,” Masidi, who is the state’s Covid-19 spokesman, said at his daily media briefing.

He said there were many foreigners living in the two localities: 25.4% of the 134 residents in Kampung Numbak confirmed positive are foreigners while in Telipok 13.4% of the 207 cases are foreigners.

He said the active testing would lead to an increase in the number of positive cases reported in the Kota Kinabalu district within the next two to three days.

There were 288 new cases and four deaths reported in Sabah today. Of the new cases, 114 or almost 40% are from Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Tuaran and Penampang districts.
