Former minister questions slashing of funds to combat anti-palm oil campaign

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok says this shows the government’s ignorance of the struggle against the anti-palm oil lobby.

Former primary industries minister Teresa Kok said the allocation to combat the anti-palm oil lobby overseas should be doubled.
PETALING JAYA:
Former primary industries minister Teresa Kok has called on the government to review its allocation for programmes to combat the anti-palm oil campaign.

She was shocked that the 2021 budget had reduced the amount from RM27 million in 2020 to RM20 million for next year.

In a statement, the Seputeh MP welcomed the increase in overall funds allocated for 2021, but was concerned that none of it was channelled towards improving the palm oil industry.

“The decrease in allocation for programmes against international anti-palm oil campaigns shows the government is completely unaware of the challenges we face in the international market. It shows the lack of understanding on the importance of the industry to the Malaysian economy.”

Kok reminded the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration that palm oil was one of the top three exports in Malaysia, generating a revenue of RM64.8 billion and contributing 3.5% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019.

“I urge the finance ministry to review the lack of allocation for programmes against anti-palm oil campaigns and to double the amount to protect this export industry due to its importance to the country.”
