KUCHING:
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has agreed to relax the 14-day mandatory quarantine order for the parents of a Sibu university student who was murdered in Taiwan upon their return to the state.

SUPP Youth chief Michael Tiang said the parents are returning home with the ashes of their daughter, identified as Irene Chung, 24, today.

He said they are expected to arrive at KLIA at 1.15pm before taking the next flight to Kuching at 1.45pm and will arrive in Sibu at 5.30pm.

Tiang said that according to the SOPs, all arrivals into Sarawak must undergo 14 days’
quarantine at the first point of entry.

“If we follow the SOPs, the parents need to be quarantined in Kuching, but SDMC has agreed to allow them to do it in Sibu,” he said, adding that they had undergone a Covid-19 swab test in Taiwan yesterday.

“We want to make things easy for them during this difficult time but we can’t be too complacent as the state has reported double-digit cases in the past few days,” he said.

Chung’s body was found in the mountainous district of Alian in Kaohsiung after she was reported missing on Oct 29. A suspect was arrested and confessed to strangling her with a rope before dumping her body the same day.

The suspect was detained for voluntary manslaughter and sexual assault.

Chung’s parents flew to Taiwan on Sunday to make funeral arrangements.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Su Tseng-chang have apologised to the family as well as to Malaysians over the murder.
