Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the amendment was in line with Federal Constitution and was passed after a unanimous support from all 59 state assemblymen.
“The amendment will allow 18-year-olds to take part in elections and subsequently become candidates for the Perak state assembly.
“The youths will have the opportunity to speak in this House and be with us here to discuss proposals and laws for the good of the state,” he said.
Faizal said 18-year-old youths were considered as mature enough to make important decisions, in line with the Age of Majority Act 1971 (Act 21).
He said this included getting married, working, obtaining a driving licence, joining a uniformed team, signing a contract or loan and being tried as an adult offender in the event of a crime.
“Reducing the voting age limit will allow youths to be active in politics and increase youth participation,” he said, adding that this move allowed Perak youths to participate in policy making and legislation activities, including state governance and to develop leadership qualities.
At the federal level, the age limit was amended in July 2019 after 211 MPs gave the nod.
