PETALING JAYA:
Veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin says the fate of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is uncertain after Umno said it was mulling retracting its support for Putrajaya.

He also said he saw an Umno ultimatum to PAS on its allegiance with its call for Muafakat Nasional (MN) to be registered as a political entity.

Kadir was commenting on Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan’s statement that the party is considering retracting its support for PN.

Ahmad, who spoke after an Umno political bureau meeting, had said they will propose new terms to the government to ensure the political cooperation will continue.

He said Umno will also propose to the MN committee for the alliance to be registered as a political party.

Kadir, who is no longer actively involved in politics, said Umno’s stand either meant PN has lost its majority in the Dewan Rakyat or that it was on a knife-edge.

“This gives credence to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s claim and (the claim of) others that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has lost majority support,” he wrote on Facebook.

He said Umno’s “new conditions” for the continuation of their political cooperation will be stricter.

But publicising the political bureau’s decision before it is taken to the Umno Supreme Council could be problematic, as it was clear some in the party’s highest decision-making body are strong supporters of Muhyiddin.

“Ahmad’s statement also tests PAS’ stand in Muafakat Nasional as it has just reiterated support for Muhyiddin and the PN government.”

By proposing the registration of MN, Kadir said, Umno has indirectly given PAS an ultimatum on whether it wants to continue with PN or MN.

MN is an alliance between Umno and PAS, the two largest Malay-Muslim parties, which was formally set up in September last year. In August, PPBM accepted an invitation to join MN.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan had said the party’s grassroots were uncomfortable with PPBM joining MN and that the Supreme Council should decide on allowing PPBM to join MN.
