PETALING JAYA:
A Pahang state executive councillor has mooted modified work arrangements, weekends and school holiday terms to boost domestic tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tourism, Culture, Environment, Plantations and Commodities Committee chairman Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin suggested that work be carried out in teams to allow one group to have longer weekends each week.

“One group can take leave on Friday if they are off on Saturday and Sunday. This can be done in turns every week, allowing each work team to go on a three-day holiday to visit interesting destinations in the country,” he said in a Facebook post today.

“If there are citizens who are able to go on holiday every week, that will surely stimulate the tourism sector and help hotels and guesthouses sustain their businesses.”

Sharkar also proposed that workers be given their weekly days off on other days, apart from the weekend. He said employees could be given their days off between Monday and Thursday, which will allow the tourism sector to get consistent business throughout the week.

He also suggested that schools have their holiday terms on different weeks instead of every school going on breaks at the same time.

“For example, schools in only three or four states will go on their breaks in each school holiday season. This is important to prevent having too many tourists at one time, causing congestion.”

He said his proposals should be implemented to invigorate the industry instead of having tourism activities focused on weekends and holidays only.
