PETALING JAYA:
Five horses in Terengganu have tested positive for African horse sickness (AHS), the first such case reported in the country.

According to The Horse, a website for horse owners and managers, the outbreak has been reported by the World Organisation for Animal Health in France.

This comes as Thailand’s horse industry recovers from its AHS outbreak with thousands of horses being vaccinated.

In the case involving the horses in Terengganu, four horses had shown signs of the disease, including fever and breathing difficulties, in mid-August.

The owner reported the symptoms to the Veterinary Services Department, the website said.

Blood samples taken and sent to the Veterinary Research Institute in Ipoh, Perak, confirmed that the four horses had AHS.

A second sampling was performed on Aug 31 and all five horses tested positive and will be euthanised, it said.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of infection.
