
This pushes the total number of infected patients nationwide to 9,249. Four of the nine new cases are imported ones.
There were no new Covid-19 related deaths today. The death toll remains at 125.
In a statement today, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said seven patients were being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) with four requiring respiratory assistance.
He said 13 patients had recovered, bringing the total number of patients discharged so far to 8,945.
The health ministry also reported a new cluster called the Maju cluster in Kuala Lumpur, with three positive cases so far.
Currently, there are 179 active cases in the country.
Noor Hisham said the four imported cases were foreigners. The infections were imported from Austria, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.
On the five local infections, he said four were Malaysians while one was a foreigner who tested positive during a pre-flight screening. The patient is asymptomatic and has been admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital.
Meanwhile, three of the four domestic transmissions involving Malaysians are from the Tawar cluster in Kedah, and the fourth was from the Maju cluster in Kuala Lumpur.
New cluster in Kuala Lumpur
On the Maju cluster, Noor Hisham said the first two cases (case 9,176 and 9,177) were reported on Aug 16, where they were identified during random Covid-19 screenings conducted around the city on restaurant staff.
Close-contact testing was then carried out where a customer at the restaurant who experienced symptoms such as a headache and sore throat since Aug 17 tested positive.
So far in this group, 672 people have been screened, including 16 workers and 656 customers. Three tested positive while 669 tested negative.
Active case detection and close-contact screenings are underway. The restaurant has also been sanitised and disinfected.
Meanwhile, regarding the Tawar cluster from Kedah, Noor Hisham said there were three new positive cases. This pushes the number of active cases from the cluster to 58 – making it the largest active cluster at present.
As of Aug 21, 2,733 people in this cluster have been screened.
