Covid-19 cases back to double digits with 21 new cases

Of the total, three were from a cluster in Kedah.

PUTRAJAYA:
The health ministry this evening confirmed 21 new Covid-19 infections, which pushes the total number of cases so far to 9,023.

Of the new cases, six are local transmissions involving Malaysians, three of which are from the PUI Sivagangga cluster in Kedah.

Two cases are from Sabah, detected at hospitals during a Covid-19 screening, and one is from the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru, which was detected during a pre-surgery screening.

The remaining 15 are imported cases involving Malaysians, 12 of whom returned from Yemen and three who returned from Papua New Guinea, Ivory Coast and the United Kingdom respectively.

The returnees were immediately quarantined upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The number of active cases stands at 196, with two being treated at the intensive care unit.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 18 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries to 8,702.

No new casualties were recorded, and the death toll remains at 125.

Noor Hisham went on to reveal that 1,647 individuals from the PUI Sivagangga cluster had been screened, 24 of whom tested positive.

Of this number, 19 are Malaysians and the rest are foreigners.

The three new Covid-19 cases from this cluster, he said, were close contacts of Covid-19 patients.

Noor Hisham also urged the public to ignore a message making the rounds on social media which “detailed” the places visited by one of the new cases.

“We would like to advice the public against spreading such false news as it is inaccurate,” he said in a statement.
