“There seems to be a trust deficit with the way the speaker was appointed,” Wong Chen said during today’s debate in the Dewan Rakyat.
The Subang MP claimed that the lack of trust was apparent with the razor-thin majority which led to previous speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof being removed from office.
He said the procedures in Parliament adopted by Najib’s administration were more professional.
On July 13, Ariff was removed by a floor vote of 111 to 109. The new speaker, Azhar Harun, then assumed the chair without any vote, causing opposition MPs to create a ruckus.
Wong also called on Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz to give a full breakdown of the stimulus package distributed to the public during the recent movement control order.
He pointed out that the RM295 billion figure touted was equivalent to 18% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
“It is hard to believe that even the rich countries (would) have a budget of 10% of GDP to fight Covid-19.
“Rich countries practise quantitative easing, whereas Malaysia only issues government securities,” he said.
He called on the government to be honest in its disclosures.
Without full financial transparency, he said, the opposition had no choice but to second guess and speculate.
“The market, too, has to speculate what is the true state of the government’s fiscal position,” he said.
