PUTRAJAYA:
The Judicial and Legal Service Commission has appointed Crime Prevention Board chairman Abdul Razak Musa as the new solicitor-general (SG) to replace Engku Nor Faizah Engku Atek who retires next week.

Attorney-General (AG) Idrus Harun announced that Razak would assume his new role on July 14.

The SG assists the AG and is by law empowered to perform any of the functions that can be carried out by the AG. This is provided for under Section 40A of the Eleventh Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

Razak, 58, will be assisted by Siti Zainab Omar, the current SG II.

Razak began his career as a magistrate in Teluk Intan in 1986.

He also served under various capacities in the judiciary and the AG’s Chambers, including a stint as prosecution head at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Razak also served as Kelantan state legal adviser and was made chairman of the Crime Prevention Board on Sept 1, 2016.

He is chairman of the Judicial and Legal Service Association which looks after the welfare of about 1,500 officers.

Under Sub-section 376(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the SG possesses all powers of a deputy public prosecutor and acts as a public prosecutor in the absence or inability of the AG to act.

The SG is also responsible for civil matters, interviews, intakes, transfers, postings and promotions of officers and any other duties directed by the AG.
