
Nurainie said in a statement that she had lost confidence in the party’s direction and leadership.
She said she was stepping down from the city council on principle as she was appointed as a member of PKR.
Asked if she would join another party, Nurainie said she would focus on her work as a lawyer and her involvement in community organisations. “I will continue to serve the people and country and give full commitment to helping those in need,” she said.
Last week she was named as head of the women’s wing of Pemuda Negara, an organisation believed to have been set up in support of former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, who is a senior minister in the Perikatan Nasional government which he helped to form in February
Nuraini is the latest of several PKR politicians who have left the party following a split between party president Anwar Ibrahim and Azmin.
Two PKR assemblymen in Kedah have left the party, causing the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government led by Mukhriz Mahathir, who resigned as menteri besar today. Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor of PAS has been appointed menteri besar of a new state government.
