Authorities including armed forces personnel were seen putting up barbed wire fences to block several roads leading to the market as well as nearby shops, including the bus station.

It is understood that some 40ha of the PJ Old Town area have come under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) and will see some 2,900 residential houses and business premises placed under lockdown until May 23.

The wet market popularly known as the “Old Town market” was shut down on April 27 after a 51-year old trader from the seafood section was found positive with Covid-19.

Those who had been to the market between April 5 and 18 and purchased seafood have been told to go for screening.

Since the easing of the movement control order (MCO) last week, several areas have come under a “targeted” MCO, including Taman Wilayah and Taman Desa Bakti in Selayang, as well as parts of Jalan Ampang and Chow Kit in Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities have said that any lockdown would be confined to affected areas to contain the pandemic. It is also meant to allow for door-to-door screening throughout the two-week period.
