PUTRAJAYA:
The Immigration Department carried out checks on 3,352 immigrants and detained 586 during an operation to crack down on undocumented migrants in enhanced movement control areas (EMCO) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Senior Minister (Security) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the migrants from Plaza City One, Malayan Mansion and the surrounding areas along Jalan Masjid India were sent to immigration centres for further action.

“The government did not disregard their welfare, including their food or health, while they were at the EMCO area. They will be taken care of at the depots,” he said during a press conference here.

Yesterday, several residents at Jalan Masjid India had told FMT that around 300 immigration officers took part in an operation to nab illegals, with photos and videos of the operation going viral.

One of the residents at Menara City One told FMT that door-to-door checks were carried out before they were taken away.

Ismail said such operations will continue during or after the MCO. Action will be taken against those who overstay in the country.

He added those unhappy with these raids were happy with the government for carrying out medical checks on migrants to curb any virus transmission.

Yesterday, human rights groups had expressed fear that such raids, when the country is fighting the Covid-10 pandemic, will make these illegals go underground and make it more difficult to trace and cure those with the virus.

Police, however, defended the move as they fear these illegals will be difficult to trace if they don’t round them up.
