Melaka next under Umno-PPBM govt, says assemblyman

Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen claims that the two parties have secured the support of a majority of assembly members.

PPBM supreme council member Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen says a PKR man will join his party.
PETALING JAYA:
A new state government will be formed in Melaka by PPBM and the Barisan Nasional, a PPBM supreme council member said tonight.

It might be the second state government after Johor to change hands since PPBM pulled out of the ruling Pakatan Harapan national coalition last week.

PPBM supreme council member Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen, who is assemblyman for Paya Rumput, said PPBM and BN have secured majority support from among state assembly members.

PPBM has two seats in the state assembly while BN, represented by Umno, has 13 seats, the same number as the ruling PH state coalition now comprising PKR, DAP and Amanah.

Rafiq said that Rembia assemblyman Muhammad Jailani Khamis of PKR would join PPBM.

FMT is seeking confirmation from Jailani.

“Including Rembia, PPBM will have three seats and will work with the 13 Umno assemblymen to form a better government,” he told reporters when met outside the private residence of Muhyiddin Yassin, who is to be sworn in tomorrow as Malaysia’s eighth prime minister.

Rafiq said that assemblymen from PPBM and BN will meet with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Khalil Yaakob in “a day or two” to form the government.

Chief Minister Adly Zahari had said earlier this week that the status quo remained and that the state government was proceeding as usual.

Hasni Mohammad of Umno was sworn in by the Sultan of Johor yesterday as menteri besar, leading a new Gabungan Baharu coalition comprising BN, PAS and PPBM.

BN, PPBM, and PAS hold a total of 28 seats in the 56-member assembly: Umno (14) and MIC (2) under Barisan Nasional; PAS (1) while PPBM has 11 members.

PH also holds 28 seats, comprising DAP (14), Amanah (9), and PKR (5) and the coalition said in a statement last night that all 28 remained with the coalition.
