Clip of ‘sleeping’ staff raises fears sick travelers slipped past airport checkpoints

A video clip has emerged showing an operator at klia2’s thermal scanners asleep at the desk, raising fears that many travelers carrying infectious diseases could have slipped past the measures implemented by the health ministry, in the wake of an influenza epidemic and the polio scare in Sabah.

The video clip was taken on Dec 26, on a day holiday-season crowds made their way through the klia2 terminal.

The clip also shows another staff member in the booth preoccupied with his mobile phone.

Thermal scanners have been installed at airports as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of infectious diseases by allowing officials to prevent anyone with a body temperature above 37 degrees Celsius from entering the country.

Last week, two new polio cases were detected in Sabah involving an 11-year-old boy from Kinabatangan and another boy, aged 8 years, from Sandakan.

The World Health Organisation confirmed that the cases were genetically linked to a polio virus strain detected in the southern Philippines.

Scores of people were also treated for Influenza A, with some schools forced to close down and hospitals reporting shortage of medicine for the flu virus.
