KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said political parties in the United States must have realised that they had elected the “wrong leader” as President Donald Trump was impeached.

“I think that is the judgement of the Congress.

“Mostly Democrats, but I’m quite sure even Republicans feel that he is the wrong leader,” he told reporters at the media centre at the KL Summit 2019.

Mahathir said Trump had breached their rules and laws and also their Constitution

“Therefore he is impeached,” he added.

Trump is only the third president in history to face removal by the Senate.

Trump became only the third president in US history to be impeached after two votes in the Democratic Party-controlled House of Representatives.

Trump, who is a Republican, strongly denies any wrongdoing.

Trump is accused of pressuring Ukraine to dig up damaging information on one of his main Democratic challengers for the presidency in 2020, Joe Biden, and his son Hunter.

The process now heads to the Senate where a trial will be held in January. The Senate is currently controlled by the Republican Party, so conviction is considered unlikely in Trump’s case.
